Yankees Reportedly Could Land $242 Million Star Depending On Phenom’s Decision
The New York Yankees have much to think about this offseason after falling three games short of winning their 28th World Series title.
The Yankees have many players hitting the free agent market this winter but none more significant than superstar outfielder Juan Soto, who could land a record-breaking contract similar to Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million deal.
Soto’s decision on where to sign this offseason will significantly impact the Yankees’ direction in 2025, possibly sending a highly coveted first baseman to the Bronx.
“A theory of one rival executive is that if Soto signs with the (New York) Mets, then agent Scott Boras — who represents Soto and slugger Pete Alonso — will work to convince the Yankees that they need Alonso to fill in the power gap,” ESPN’s Buster Olney wrote Monday when discussing the Yankees’ offseason agenda.
Alonso has batted .249 with 375 extra-base hits including 226 home runs, 586 RBIs and a .853 OPS throughout his six-season career with the Mets.
According to Spotrac, Alonso’s projected market value is roughly $242 million over a seven-year deal, translating to nearly $35 million annually.
The four-time All-Star is a valuable asset to have when it comes to the postseason. Alonso has logged a .278/.431/.568 slash line with six extra-base hits including five home runs, 11 RBIs and a 1.003 OPS throughout 16 playoff games played for the Mets.
With Alonso being one of the most coveted hitters on the free agent market this winter, the Yankees would be wise to pursue him, especially after Anthony Rizzo’s 2025 club option was recently declined. However, it might not be financially feasible if Soto remains in the Bronx.
