Yankees’ Gleyber Torres Exits Thursday’s Game vs Orioles With Injury

Another day, another Yankees injury.

On Thursday, New York Yankees All-Star infielder Gleyber Torres exited the team’s game against the Baltimore Orioles ahead of the top of the sixth inning. The Yankees later revealed he was forced out of the game with tightness in his right groin.

Torres was 1-for-2 with a home run on Thursday, but was replaced in the lineup by rookie Ben Rice.

This injury adds to a growing list of injuries to the Bronx Bombers this week. On Monday, it was revealed that All-Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo suffered an arm fracture, and would miss at least four to six weeks. Ahead of Tuesday’s game, Rizzo was placed on the injured list alongside two pitchers in a massive roster move.

Then, during Tuesday’s series opener against the Orioles, superstar outfielder Aaron Judge was hit by a fastball and exited the game. He ended up missing Wednesday’s game before returning to the lineup Thursday.

Before Thursday’s game, though, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that top prospect Jasson Domínguez has suffered yet another injury — this time an oblique issue — and will miss eight weeks. This comes a week after it was revealed that another top outfield prospect, Everson Pereira, would be out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Domínguez had the same procedure last year.

The Yankees should provide further updates on Torres after the game, but they’ll hope it’s a minor issue for the two-time All-Star second baseman. The Yankees were down 11-5 when he was removed from the game.

Torres is in the midst of a down year in his seventh season in New York. Including his home run on Thursday, the 27-year-old is slashing .221/.300/.341 with seven home runs, 28 RBIs, and an OPS of .641, which would be the lowest of his career.

Torres burst onto the major league scene in 2018, making back-to-back All-Star teams his first two years with the Yankees. His best season came in 2019, when he slashed .278/.337/.535 with 38 home runs, 90 RBIs, and an OPS of .871.

After down years in 2020 and 2021, Torres hit 20 or more home runs in each of the last two seasons, and had an impressive .800 OPS in 2023. He’s struggled to replicate those numbers this year, though, and now appears to be dealing with an injury.

The lack of production from the infield outside of shortstop Anthony Volpe has been one of the biggest issues for the Yankees all year long. That issue will only be more prominent if Torres is forced to miss time.
