Why Victor Boniface is unavailable for Brest challenge today
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface will miss Bayer Leverkusen’s Champions League match against Brest following injuries he sustained in a recent car accident.
The 23-year-old forward was involved in the accident on Sunday, shortly after playing a key role in Leverkusen’s 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. Boniface was on his way to Frankfurt airport when the vehicle he was traveling in collided with a truck. While he escaped with minor injuries, the incident has ruled him out of the upcoming Champions League fixture.
Leverkusen’s Announcement and Squad Changes
Leverkusen confirmed the news on social media:
“Victor Boniface has not travelled for #BrestB04, with Francis Onyeka replacing him in the squad.”
Boniface’s absence will be a significant blow for Leverkusen, as the striker has been instrumental this season, scoring seven goals in ten appearances across all competitions. Manager Xabi Alonso will need to adjust his plans against Brest, who are currently unbeaten in their domestic league.
Opportunity for Francis Onyeka
With Boniface unavailable, 17-year-old Francis Onyeka has been called up to the squad. Onyeka, a Germany U17 international eligible to play for Nigeria, has been impressive in the UEFA Youth League and youth internationals, scoring five goals in six matches during the European Championship qualifiers.
Onyeka now has the chance to make his senior debut for Leverkusen in a high-pressure game. His inclusion highlights the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent, especially in crucial fixtures like this one.
Recovery Hopes
Boniface is now focused on recovery, with fans and teammates hopeful for his swift return to action. Leverkusen will miss his presence up front as they look to secure an important result without one of their top performers this season.
All eyes will be on Onyeka to see if the young forward can rise to the occasion in what promises to be an exciting Champions League encounter.
