Who are Hunter Biden’s Lawyers? Meet the Team Beside the President’s Son

Hunter Biden is standing trial in Delaware this week, accused of illegally purchasing and possessing a firearm while being addicted to drugs, with his high-profile defense team by his side.

Biden, who is the first child of a sitting U.S. president to be criminally tried in federal court, was charged in September by U.S. Special Counsel David Weiss with three felonies, following his purchase of a Cold Cobra .38 revolver in October 2018. Prosecutors allege Biden, 54, made false statements on a federal form in order to buy the gun. He denies the charges against him.

Biden’s defense lawyer is Abbe D. Lowell, an attorney who has represented well-known players in politics on both sides of the aisle.

Who is Abbe Lowell?

A partner at law firm Winston & Strawn, Lowell, 72, is described as “one of the country’s foremost white collar defense and trial lawyers” on its website.

His specialties include arguing cases around regulatory enforcement, including those involving the United States Congress. Over his years of practice, the attorney has been involved in trials across 15 different federal and state courts, as well as at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Lowell has represented high-profile companies including Goldman Sachs and GNC, as well as well-known public officials such as Senator Robert Menendez and Governor George Pataki.

In 2018, the attorney represented the daughter of former president Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump, and her husband Jared Kushner, who had allegedly benefited from income outside their unpaid roles within the White House.

Lowell argued that their multi-million-dollar incomes declared on financial disclosure forms were within government ethics rules.

Kushner was also accused of using WhatsApp to conduct business and speak with foreign leaders in late 2018, with Lowell again arguing his client worked within the rules.

During that time, Lowell came under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in a “bribery-for-pardon scheme”, which the Department of Justice later dropped.

The Columbia Law School grad’s career has seen him work across the political spectrum, with time as part of the Clinton administration in the 1990s.

Lowell worked as the chief investigative counsel for Democrats in the House of Representatives, to defend against the impeachment of Bill Clinton.

Another attorney funding the defense

All that experience comes at a price, with entertainment lawyer Kevin Morris – a long-time financial supporter of Biden – helping to fund the legal expenses associated with the case.

Morris was seen alongside Biden as he appeared for a congressional contempt hearing earlier this year and has been at his trial alongside Lowell in Wilmington.

In January, Biden told the LA Times that Morris hadn’t just helped him financially, but he had helped him to get his life in order.

“I don’t know where I would be if not for Kevin,” Biden told the outlet. “And I don’t mean just because he has loaned me money to survive this onslaught, I mean because he has given me back my dignity. He’s been a brother to me.”

Biden’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, is expected to testify Wednesday in a Delaware federal court about his drug use as his trial continues into day three.

Jurors could also hear from Hunter’s former girlfriend, Zoe Kestan, as well as Hallie Biden, the widow of his late brother Beau Biden, with whom Hunter also had a brief relationship.
