What Victor Boniface needs from Nigerians
A former defender for the Super Eagles Chikelue Iloenyosi has urged Nigerian fans to remain patient with Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface amid his national team goal drought.
Despite his solid performance for Bayer Leverkusen, where he has netted seven goals and provided one assist in 13 appearances this season, Boniface has faced challenges with the national team, scoring only once in nine matches.
Chikelue Iloenyosi has called for understanding from supporters, emphasizing Boniface’s potential. In an interview with Premium Times, he stated, “Nigerians often lack patience, but Boniface is an exceptional player. We must give him time. He’s thriving at his club, and once he finds his scoring touch with the national team, he could emerge as a top goalscorer.”
Iloenyosi highlighted the physical demands of the Bundesliga, noting that fitness is crucial for success. He described Boniface as a dedicated and pleasant individual, expressing his support for the striker.
As interim coach Augustine Eguavoen prepares the squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Rwanda and Benin Republic, Boniface’s contributions will be vital for the team’s success. The striker and his teammates have already resumed training in anticipation of the matches.
As predicted, Boniface may start the game against Benin Republic from the bench with Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen heavily tipped to lead the attack on Thursday.
