What is Happening to Boater Who Killed Florida Teen?

Newly released video shows the 78-year-old boat operator who fatally struck Florida teenager Ella Adler in the moments before and after the tragic collision.

Adler, a 15-year-old Miami Beach resident, was wakeboarding in Key Biscayne on May 11 when she fell into the water, was struck by a boat and died from her injuries.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission identified Carlos Guillermo Alonso, who also goes by “Bill,” as the person operating the vessel in an accident report obtained by Newsweek. He is also the owner of the boat.

His attorney, Lauren Field Krasnoff, sent Newsweek video footage that appears to show Alonso leaving and returning to the dock behind his home on Saturday.

“This was an unthinkable tragedy and our hearts break for Ella and her family,” Krasnoff said. “We hope this video helps to shut down some of the awful and unfounded rumors going around about Bill, who is absolutely devastated.”

Krasnoff said the video shows Alonso was the only person on the boat at the time.

“He was not drinking. And he had no clue that he may have hit someone – he parked the boat at his home, he was calm, he didn’t clean the boat, and he did not try to hide anything,” Krasnoff said.

The departure video was taken just after 3 p.m. Alonso is seen walking around the boat and preparing to depart. He arrived back at the dock around 4:30 p.m.

Krasnoff previously told Newsweek Alonso has no criminal record and he was driving his boat at a “reasonable rate of speed.”

Alonso will continue to cooperate with authorities in any way possible, according to Krasnoff. The FWC has previously said Alonso is cooperating with the investigation.

No charges have been filed yet in this case and the FWC told Newsweek on Monday they have “no new information to share at this time.”

Adler is the granddaughter of US Ambassador to Belgium Michael M. Adler. First Lady Jill Biden visited Adler’s family in Florida on May 14 to pay condolences.

Adler was a ballerina who performed over 100 times in “The Nutcracker” with the Miami City Ballet at the Adrienne Arsht Center, according to her obituary. She also participated in the dance team, school play and Jewish Students Association at Ransom Everglades School in Miami.

“Today, our hearts ache as we mourn the loss of a bright young soul,” Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said on X. “My deepest condolences to the Adler family. Let’s honor her memory by exercising better boat safety, to ensure tragedies like this never happen again. May she rest in peace.”
