‘We can beat Nigeria’ – Benin Republic skipper Steve Mounie boasts
Benin Republic captain Steve Mounie has sent a clear message to Nigeria’s Super Eagles ahead of their upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifier.
Speaking to the press, Mounie expressed confidence that his team can repeat their 2-1 win over Nigeria in June when the two sides meet again in Abidjan.
The match, which will take place at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium, is crucial for both teams. The Super Eagles only need a point to secure their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, but Mounie believes his team is ready to cause an upset once again.
“We have to put in a good performance to win,” Mounie said. “I remember when I was with Stade Brest, we stood up to big teams in France. I told my teammates that we can do the same against Nigeria. We must look them in the eye and play with confidence. We need to be actors in this match, not just spectators.”
The match kicks off at 8:00 PM WAT, and Nigeria will be wary of underestimating their West African rivals after the surprise defeat earlier this year.
