Trump Shuffles Around Stage for Almost 20 Minutes After Mic Cuts at Rally

Former President Donald Trump on Friday was in the middle of telling an arena full of diehard supporters what his favorite word in the dictionary is, when his mic abruptly cut off.

Trump then spent nearly 20 minutes shuffling around the stage at his rally in Detroit, Michigan, as his fans alternated between chanting his name, doing the wave and cheering for the Republican presidential nominee.

“Fight, fight, fight,” they chanted at one point.

While Trump paced around the stage, a sign onscreen read, “Technical Difficulties. Complicated Business.”

After about 20 minutes, Trump went back to the mic to test it out.

“Hello?” he said. The mic was working again, and the crowd burst into uproarious applause.

“Well, thank you everybody,” Trump said. “Thank you. So, now what happens is I won’t pay the bill for this stupid company that rented us this crap.”

“But here is my plan,” he said as the crowd cheered some more. “Do we have fun? And can everybody hear perfectly now? I don’t like the mic anyway, I didn’t like it from the minute I started.”

Trump went on to talk about his proposal to impose steep tariffs on American trading partners, a key pillar of the Trump campaign’s economic plan.

“They will pay a tariff, a very stiff tariff when they send their products into the United States for the privilege of competing with our workers and our cherished companies,” the Republican nominee said. “We’re not going to let them steal our companies like they have in the past.”

Trump said his tariff policy is called the “Build It In America Plan.”

The former president waxed poetic about his love for tariffs—which he said is his favorite word in the dictionary—earlier in the day as well, during a roundtable with voters in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

“You have other words that are damn nice, like ‘love,'” Trump said, while others in the room laughed. “But I tell you, I think it’s more beautiful than ‘love.'”

Economists have warned, however, that the former president’s plan would impose significant costs on Americans.

The Washington Post published a lengthy report this week detailing how, if implemented, Trump’s tariff plan could be disastrous for the U.S. economy, with American consumers bearing the brunt of the cost. It could also lead to greater uncertainty in the stock market, and spark conflicts between the U.S. and other countries.

Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris both stumped in Michigan on Friday as part of their final push to win over independent and undecided voters heading into the November election.

Harris held a rally in the afternoon, addressed union auto workers afterward, and will hold a second rally in Detroit on Friday evening.
