Today’s ‘Wordle’ #1,054 Clues and Answer for Wednesday, May 8 Puzzle

Some days Wordle is trickier than others, so Newsweek is here to help you figure out today’s answer.

The word-based game was first created by Josh Wardle in 2013, but was discarded after his friends were unimpressed by the prototype.

However, the Brooklyn-based software engineer revisited Wordle during the COVID-19 pandemic, perfecting the game as a gift for his crossword-loving partner. When Wardle eventually uploaded the game to the web, he had no idea it would become a viral sensation.

He released Wordle to the public in October 2021, and by January 2, 2022, it had 300,000 users, according to figures by Statista. Impressed by the game’s success, The New York Times purchased Wordle for a seven-figure sum, and its player base grew to millions.

Since then, the NYT has made some tweaks to the game, including removing some words from the database that could be seen as offensive. It also removed the cache of historical Wordle games online.

It also did a deep dive into some interesting trends and playing styles of the daily word puzzle by analyzing 515 million Wordle games, finding that one in every 250 games is guessed on the first attempt, which is too high a number to be explained by chance.

“This is much more often than you’d expect if you just left things to chance, although not necessarily every case is outright cheating,” said writers Josh Katz and Aatish Bhatia, who work for the NYT.

“Some may be using a new window to make additional guesses after failing to solve the puzzle in six tries. Some may be re-entering a solution they found on a different device to maintain a streak, or to test a technical issue. Others may have had the answer spoiled, or, yes, may have looked it up.”
