The Mentor Behind Manchester United’s New Boss”
Incoming Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has openly expressed his admiration for José Mourinho, crediting the legendary Portuguese coach as a significant influence in his career.
Speaking ahead of Sporting Lisbon’s Champions League face-off against Manchester City, Amorim revealed how Mourinho’s success and leadership style have shaped his own coaching philosophy.
“(Mourinho) showed me that you can win everything and still be a completely different person from what people sometimes think,” Amorim said during the press conference. He described Mourinho as a trailblazer who “opened doors for everyone, especially in his era,” adding, “When he first appeared, we knew his teams would win, and that was significant for us as Portuguese, as it made us believe in ourselves a bit more.”
Amorim is set to face Manchester City in what will be his second-to-last match with Sporting before taking the reins at Old Trafford. The young manager emphasized that Sporting would stick to the offensive “identity” that has led them to an undefeated season in the Portuguese league so far. Reflecting on his last encounter with City, a difficult 0-5 defeat in 2022, Amorim said he feels like a “better coach” now, though he acknowledged, “Guardiola is also a better coach.” With an improved squad, Amorim believes Sporting can play “a more complete game” this time around.
As Amorim prepares to bring his Mourinho-inspired tenacity to Manchester United, fans are hopeful he will channel his mentor’s winning spirit into new success at Old Trafford.
