T20 WC 2024 | Nortje, de Kock return as South Africa announce squad
Quinton de Kock will be back in action for his national side in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Despite his poor form lately, the selectors chose to use de Kock’s experience and havr bestowed faith in him for the grand tournament. The upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup will mark his final international assignment following his departure from ODI cricket, where he concluded with four centuries in last year’s World Cup. Furthermore, the Proteas batter has struggled managing just 236 runs in nine matches, averaging 26.22 for Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League this season. Meanwhile, Anrich Nortje will make an international comeback after being out from the squad for nine months and will join the contingent after serving his current IPL team Delhi Capitals. Nortje’s inclusion was also important as Lungi Ngidi missed the IPL due to a back injury.
Opener Ryan Rickleton and pacer Ottniel Baartman, both standout performers in this year’s SA20, have been called up for national duties. Rickelton represented the MI Cape Town franchise, and emerged as the top run-scorer with an impressive tally of 530 runs, while Baartman showcased his bowling skills by claiming 18 wickets securing the second-highest spot in the wicket-taking charts.
The batting lineup will feature a robust top and middle order comprising Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, and Tristan Stubbs, with no additional batters among the reserves. Meanwhile, Rassie van der Dussen and Matthew Breetzke, the leading run-scorer in the CSA T20 Challenge and the third-highest scorer in the SA20 respectively, have been ignored to play for the T20 world.
The Proteas pace attack will consist of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, Gerald Coetzee and Baartman, with all-rounder Marco Jansen. Meanwhile, the frontline spin department will feature Bjorn Fortuin, Keshav Maharaj, and Tabraiz Shamsi.
South Africa squad: Aiden Markram (c), Ottniel Baartman, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs.
Travelling reserves: Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi.
