Stephen A. Smith Reacts to Suggestion He Should Run for President of the United States
During an appearance on “The View”, longtime NBA analyst and personality, Stephen A. Smith discussed the possibility of himself running for President of the United States.
“I have said this on many occasions, the answer would be hell no because I like my life, living a pretty good life. But I must confess, I wish I could debate some of these guys. I’d love to be up on the debate stage going up against these guys with the Presidency on the line. I’m half joking but I kind of mean it. I have no desire to be a congressional figure or a senator but if you came to me and you told me I had a legitimate shot to win the presidency of the United States of America, I would definitely consider it.”
Smith has been one of the more outspoken voices in sports for years so this should come as no surprise to anyone. He isn’t shy about speaking his mind and has plenty of experience debating issues, albeit in the sports world.
This discussion was sparked due to now President-elect Donald Trump having no political experience yet being elected as President two different times.
The longtime NBA personality also revealed what party he would register with if he ever did decide to run for the presidency.
“But I would be an independent because I don’t like either side and I’m not gonna be bought and paid for. I’m going to do what I believe is in the best interest of the American people, whatever that may be. And I’m going to make my decisions and I’m going to stand on it.”
This notion was pushed back on by co-host Whoopi Goldberg, saying that everyone says this before they get into politics. But Smith again looked at it in a different way.
“That’s because they are at the mercy of the pocketbooks on either side because they know that it takes money to campaign, do commercials. But look at what Trump did in terms of the commercials that he was running against Kamala Harris. He spent millions upon millions of dollars.”
It remains to be seen if Smith would actually consider a run for the presidency down the line or if the American people would support him. But it seems to be a talking point that could continue to go on through this next cycle.
