SRH vs PSBKS | Twitter in splits as forgetful Nitin Menon abruptly stops play to wait for DRS decision

Never before in cricket history have umpires been under such severe scrutiny for every decision they make, and the pressure often culminates into erratic moments on the field. Nitin Menon was one such victim in Hyderabad on Sunday after he waved play-on despite a decision being under review.

Sunrisers Hyderabad were handed a huge blow straightaway in a challenging chase of 215 against Punjab Kings when Arshdeep Singh dispatched Travis Head for a golden duck. Nevertheless, Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi reined the momentum back for the hosts through a blistering 72-run partnership and although the stand was replete with a plethora of memorable shots, none injected as much hilarity into proceedings as a bizarre incident revolving around Nitin Memon.

On the second ball of the fourth over, Rishi Dhawan slid a ball down Triapthi’s leg that beat both the batter and the wicketkeeper to make its way to the boundary. Umpire Nitin Menon immediately signalled four wides, much to the surprise of the bowler, who looked at skipper Jitesh Sharma in anticipation and the gloveman obliged by asking for a review. However, before any action could be taken on it, the umpire himself changed his decision to signal leg-byes. With the visitors thus content, the play was set to resume but just as Dhawan steamed in and was about to leap while preparing to deliver, Menon stopped him in his tracks stating that a review was under way. A few confused faces spotted the stadium thereafter, but eventually the review went through and confirmed it was indeed leg-byes.

Twitterati was thoroughly amused by proceedings and took to social media to express their reactions,

Brain is not braining!
