Shoaib Malik tears into Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, says he would’ve resigned if he was in Babar’s shoes
Pakistan had a disastrous T20 World Cup campaign. They lost their first two matches against India and USA to crash out of the tournament.
Following a dismal T20 World Cup campaign, former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik has sparked controversy with his recent comments regarding current captain Babar Azam’s leadership role.
I would have resigned: Shoaib Malik
During a candid interview on a local sports channel, Malik stated his opinion that he would have given up the captaincy after Pakistan‘s disastrous 2024 T20 World Cup performance if he had been in Babar Azam‘s shoes.
“I immediately would have resigned from the captaincy and directed all of my focus on my cricket. It happened to me once, and I was offered the role again in 2009-10, but I did not accept the offer. The reason was simple, I just wanted to focus on my cricket so if I were in his place, I would have resigned immediately,” Malik said.
No improvement
The seasoned all-rounder cited Babar Azam’s track record as captain to bolster his opinion.
“I am not just saying this, my argument is backed by Babar’s numbers as captain, but I am willing to sideline the statistics. If he shows improvement and plays well for the country and team then he should definitely continue as captain. But there is no improvement,” he said.
