The absence of Gill would be a huge blow, provided that Rohit Sharma is likely to miss the first Test at the Optus Stadium, in Perth. Gill was fielding at the slip cordon when he injured himself while trying to catch the ricocheting ball off the outside edge during India’s simulation against India A. Although additional details on his injury are yet to be seen, he was seen in grimace at the time of the injury.
Gill has been a vital cog in the Indian Test team since his debut in Australia in 2020. He averaged 51.80 across six innings during his last outing on the Aussie shores when India triumphed in the Border Gavaskar Trophy under Ajinkya Rahane’s leadership.
As per speculations, he was one of the nominees to open the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, the seriousness of the injury would determine India’s playing XI for the opening Test in Perth. KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran are other batters under the management’s scanners who could potentially open the innings with Jaiswal. Earlier, it was reported that KL Rahul incurred a blow to his elbow on Friday and left the field during the simulation game. It would be interesting to see how things unfurl as the BGT nears.
