Pilot Dies, Passenger Injured After Plane Crashes in Georgia
One person died following a small plane crash Sunday night in a residential neighborhood of Savannah, Georgia, according to local police.
The Savannah Police Department stated that officers were dispatched to the crash site on East 66th Street, which is located approximately 3 miles south of the city’s historic landmark district. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to assess the situation and provide aid.
“The pilot is deceased, and the passenger has minor injuries,” the Savannah police posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. They further stated, “No one on the ground was injured,” alleviating concerns for residents in the area.
The Savannah firefighter union reported on Facebook that the crash occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Local firefighters and emergency services worked together to secure the area, ensuring that no further incidents could occur.
The Savannah Professional Firefighters Association shared a photograph of the mangled plane lying in front of a house, illustrating the severity of the crash and the damage inflicted.
According to FlightAware, the airplane is registered to Marti Jorge out of Miami. The aircraft is a 1964 CESSNA 336, Fixed-wing multiengine with 4 seats.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been called in to conduct a thorough investigation. Initial reports indicate that the small aircraft may have experienced technical difficulties before it went down, but investigators have not confirmed any specifics at this time.
Residents in the neighborhood expressed concern over the incident, as such occurrences are rare in their community. Some reported hearing a loud noise just before the crash, while others described seeing the plane flying low prior to the impact.
The police and fire departments are urging anyone with additional information about the crash to come forward. As investigations continue, local officials are focused on providing support to those affected and ensuring safety measures are in place for the surrounding community.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available regarding the investigation. The city is also offering counseling services for residents shaken by the incident, emphasizing the community’s commitment to healing and support.
As the investigation unfolds, the Savannah Police Department is working closely with the FAA and other agencies to gather more details surrounding this tragic event and the impact it has had on the local population and neighborhood.
The community remains vigilant, hoping for answers and a resolution to this unfortunate incident.
