Patriots’ Drake Maye Exits Game With Apparent Concussion

UPDATE:

Maye is confirmed to have a concussion and is officially ruled out of the game against the Jets.

The New England Patriots have started rookie Drake Maye for the past two weeks, and so far, the rookie has shown plenty of promise. However, the young quarterback has now exited the game with what appears to be a concussion.

Maye had to be evaluated in the blue medical tent and went straight to the locker room directly after. If he did receive a concussion, the young quarterback will be taken out of the rest of the game and have to clear protocol to suit up again.

Though Jacoby Brissett was benched in favor of Maye, he is now in.

Maye was having a decent game before exiting with his apparent concussion. The rookie secured 3-for-6 passes for 23 yards but had a much more impressive 46 yards on the ground with a touchdown.

The Patriots are taking on the New York Jets in an important divisional matchup. Both teams have struggled in 2024, but the Patriots are facing a 1-7 record if they lose today. Having seven losses on the season at this point might doom the team from being able to secure a playoff berth.

Even worse is if Maye is out for multiple weeks due to a concussion, it will place the team back into the same position they were in with Brissett at the helm. That is not to say that Brissett is not a solid veteran, but Patriots’ head coach Jerod Mayo had placed a lot of faith in the fact that Maye could lead the team to some much-needed wins.

The issue with putting Maye in is that the Patriots have a shaky offensive line. He is also a big-time rusher and is always going to be in a bit more danger with trying to make plays with his feet.

At the time of this writing, the Jets are leading the way with 13 points, but the Patriots are right behind with seven. This is still anyone’s game. Now, New England will have to see if Brissett can come in and start getting the offense going again.

Maye is set to undergo more tests to determine if he does, in fact, have a concussion. If that is confirmed, he will need to clear protocol to make it back to the field. That protocol can take multiple weeks depending on how severe the injury is.

For now, Brissett will come in and hope to get some scoring going for the Patriots.
