New Texans WR Stefon Diggs Paid Insane Price to Get Desired Jersey Number in Houston

New Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs isn’t wasting time spending his new, restructured contract.

Diggs, who had the final three years of his four-year contract eliminated by the Texans after they acquired him in a trade with the Buffalo Bills, is paying a hefty sum from his $22.5 million salary to get the jersey number of his choice.

According to KPRC, Diggs is paying his new teammate, Jimmie Ward, a whopping $100,000 for his No. 1 jersey for the 2024-25 season.

Diggs wore No. 1 when he was in college at Maryland. However, since coming to the NFL — with both the Minnesota Vikings and Bills — Diggs has worn No. 14.

Clearly, Diggs thought it was time for a change, as he easily could have taken the No. 14 jersey, which was worn by wide receiver Alex Bachman last year.

However, Diggs wanted to go back to his college number, and gave Ward a nice gift to get it. Ward will now be going back to No. 20, which he wore with the San Francisco 49ers.

Diggs was shockingly traded to the Texans earlier this week in a deal that brought a second-round pick back to Buffalo. The four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver hinted at potentially wanting out all offseason. Finally, a deal came to fruition.

Diggs seems very excited to be in Houston, as he’s already posted pictures from the team’s facility on his personal Twitter/X account.

He also appeared in a video on the Texans’ Twitter/X account, where he introduced himself to the fans.

Diggs likely didn’t need to do much introducing, as he’s made a name for himself as one of the best receivers in the NFL. Diggs has at least 100 catches in five of the last six seasons, and has surpassed the 1,000 yard mark in all six of them.

Diggs was an All-Pro First Teamer in 2020, when he led the league in receptions (127) and receiving yards (1,535). His career-high for touchdowns in a season came in 2022, when he reeled in 11.

Diggs is coming off a 2023 season in which he caught 107 passes for 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns, but he did struggle in the second half of the season. He didn’t eclipse the 100-yard mark in a game once after Week 6, and had just one touchdown catch after Week 11.

Diggs is now getting a fresh start for the second time in his career, after playing with the Vikings from 2015-19 before they traded him to Buffalo ahead of the 2020 season.

Diggs is joining a young Texans team that took a leap in 2023, the first year with Offensive Rookie of the Year winner C.J. Stroud at quarterback. Diggs joins a stacked receiving core led by Tank Dell and Nico Collins, that also features Noah Brown, John Metchie III and the always-reliable Dalton Schultz at tight end. At running back, Houston added Pro Bowler Joe Mixon this offseason, too.

Houston could have one of the best offenses in football next season as they look to get back to the postseason for a second straight year. They’re doing what they can this offseason to make an even deeper run this time around after losing in the Divisional Round against the Baltimore Ravens last year.
