Motorway shut after lorry overturns near Bicester

A crash involving an overturned lorry has partially shut a stretch of the M40 northbound in Oxfordshire.

The HGV ended up across the carriageway between junction 9, Bicester and junction 10, Brackley. Police said the driver suffered a minor injury.

One lane of the southbound carriageway between the junctions is also shut.

Traffic is being diverted off junction 9 onto the A34 with the motorway expected to remain closed into the afternoon.

Drivers are being warned to seek alternative routes.

National Highways said the lorry, which had been travelling on the southbound carriageway, went through the central reservation ending up on the northbound carriageway hitting a bridge support about a mile from J9.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said it sent four fire engines to the motorway shortly after 05:15 BST.

The fire service said crews arrived to find a lorry was on its side and “released the driver who was trapped”.

It added “thankfully nobody was seriously injured” and crews left the driver in the care of South Central Ambulance Service.

Delays of over an hour have been reported in both directions of the M40 approaching Bicester.
