Mikel Obi urges Chelsea to deliver in big matches after Liverpool defeat
Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel has called on his former club to improve their performance in key matches after their 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.
Despite Chelsea’s promising start to the season under new manager Enzo Maresca, their struggles in high-pressure games have raised concerns. Mikel’s message aims to inspire the team to turn their form around.
Chelsea’s Struggles in Big Games
While Chelsea has secured eight wins in their 12 Premier League matches, they continue to struggle against top teams.
At Anfield, the Blues initially showed promise but were undone by Mohamed Salah’s brilliance and a decisive goal from Curtis Jones. Although Nicolas Jackson levelled the score in the second half, Chelsea failed to sustain their momentum, ultimately falling short once again in a crucial encounter.
Mikel’s Message to Chelsea
Following the defeat, Mikel Obi took to Instagram to express his disappointment and motivate the squad. In his post, the former Super Eagles star wrote, “Unlucky @ChelseaFC, but we have to start winning the big games.”
The loss to Liverpool was Chelsea’s second defeat against a top-six opponent in two matches, underscoring their need for improvement in matches against elite rivals if they aim to compete for trophies this season.
A Reminder of Chelsea’s Winning Mentality
Mikel’s words serve as a reminder of the winning mentality the club held during his time at Stamford Bridge, when Chelsea regularly delivered under pressure. The Blues will need to rediscover that mindset if they hope to challenge for major honours this season.
The focus now shifts to their upcoming fixtures, where Maresca’s men will look to bounce back and make a statement against the league’s top sides.
