Michael Jordan Reveals Tyler Reddick Worries After NASCAR Homestead-Miami Win
Tyler Reddick claimed the victory in the Straight Talk Wireless 400 at Homestead-Miami, securing his place in the NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4 at Phoenix come November 10.
Watching from Tyler Reddick’s pit stall, 23XI Racing co-owner and NBA legend Michael Jordan revealed both his excitement and worries as he witnessed firsthand the decisive move that clinched the win. Whilst speaking to NBC Sports following the race, Jordan explained:
“Almost thought we were gonna run out of gas, but we knew we needed a caution at the end, and anything can happen after that.
“Denny was up there and lil kid drove his ass off. I’m proud of him. He just went for it, and we needed it.”
The win at Homestead-Miami was no small feat, given Reddick entered the race 30 points below the cutline. It meant that the pressure was on to either claim victory at Homestead or in the subsequent race at Martinsville to secure his spot in the Championship 4.
A timely caution from Kyle Larson’s spin allowed Reddick to maintain his position within striking distance. At the final restart, Reddick faced stiff competition from rivals Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney, who surged ahead with fresher tires. Yet, in a stunning move, Reddick overtook both on the final lap to take the win and a chance at the championship.
Reflecting on his victory, Reddick commented to the media:
“I don’t know, we were backed in a corner and had no other choice. I knew we were on a tire deficit, and here at Homestead, that’s a death sentence, but I didn’t care.
“We did what it took to win this race, and we’re fighting for a championship.
“I couldn’t believe it. I just knew I needed to get even with him on his right side door, and he raced me clean, and I appreciate it. I’m just really, really excited having a shot at the championship.”
