Manchester roads close as thousands run half marathon
A swathe of land around Manchester is being closed to traffic as thousands of runners take part in a half marathon
People are warned to expect travel disruption during the Manchetser Half Marathon, which begins at 08:55 BST at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground.
Roads are shut from Sale to Castlefield – in some areas until 1600.
Among those taking part are Livvy and Frankie Joyce the son and daughter of The Smiths drummer Mike Joyce who are running in memory of the Manchester band’s ’ bassist Andy Rourke who died of cancer in May 2023
Nine consultant surgeons from The Christie hospital in Manchester will swap their scrubs for running vests as they take part in a team, organised by urological surgeon Aziz Gulamhusein.
They are aiming to raise funds for The Christie Charity, which support patients and their families.
In the elite race Jack Rowe, who broke the course record last year finishing in 1:02:40, is back to defend his title.
People are being encouraged to cheer their friends and family at two new cheer zones – one at Deansgate Interchange and the second the “Buzz Hub’” at Wharfside.
More than 100 roads are to be closed for the event – click here for a full list.
