Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid (2-0) Nov 3, 2021 Match Preview and Stats
Liverpool host Atletico Madrid in the fourth group stage game of this season’s Champions League, hoping to do the double over the 2020/21 La Liga champions.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were victorious at the Wanda Metropolitano two weeks ago, with goals from Naby Keita and a Mohamed Salah double enough to see off Atleti, despite Antoine Griezmann’s brace.
It was an eventful night for Griezmann, who was also sent off so will miss this return leg.
As for Liverpool absences, the midfield is of great concern.
Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara have barely featured this season, and while Klopp has revealed they are in contention, a start seems fairly unlikely.
The German boss has also announced that Keita will miss out. The former RB Leizpig man has suffered with major injury issues since joining from the Bundesliga, and his bad luck has struck again.
It means that an all-English midfield of Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Curtis Jones are likely to feature from the start.
How will Liverpool line up?
As for the rest of the team, Alisson will remain between the sticks, with the trusted full-back pairing of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson playing in front of him.
Ibrahima Konate started against Brighton, so he will most likely make way for Joel Matip. The pair have been rotating who features next to Virgil van Dijk recently, and it’s Matip’s turn. Joe Gomez is still yet to start in the league, and only has one start in Europe this term.
The midfield will be as mentioned above, while Diogo Jota should come back in for Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian started against Brighton, so it’s Jota’s turn.
Salah and Sadio Mane will play either side of the former Wolves man.
