Libya help Nigeria’s Super Eagles to qualify for 2025 AFCON before Benin Republic clash
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have officially secured their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and they can largely credit Libya for this achievement.
The qualification was confirmed without Nigeria needing to play a match against, following Libya’s unexpected away win against Rwanda in a Group D clash.
The result solidified Nigeria’s position among the top two teams in the group, ensuring their passage to Morocco next year.
The Super Eagles benefited significantly from a contentious situation involving Libya, where Nigeria had previously been awarded three points from a suspended match due to a hostage crisis at a Libyan airport.
This incident left Nigerian players stranded without food or water, prompting the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to sanction Libya by declaring the match a forfeit, awarding Nigeria a 3-0 victory.
Following Libya’s recent win, Nigeria remains atop Group D with 10 points from four matches, enjoying a four-point lead over second-placed Benin Republic.
Rwanda sits third with five points and has only one game remaining. With just two matches left in the qualifiers, Nigeria’s qualification is firmly secured, regardless of the outcomes to come.
The Super Eagles are now poised to participate in AFCON 2025, which is set to take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
