Laughter As Cat Visits Beach, Decides the Sand Isn’t Good Enough for Her
A woman from Los Angeles took her kitty to the beach with her to chill, but the feline soon decided that the sand there wasn’t up to her standards, so the poster quickly thought of a practical way to save the day.
In a viral TikTok video shared in August by @athitheexplorer, the poster can be seen holding her tabby tuxedo kitten, Athi, on a leash while the feline goes potty in her own litterbox, which her mom carried all the way from home, despite all the sand surrounding her.
“POV [point of view] your kitty would only pee in her personal litterbox,” reads a caption shared with the hilarious clip. Newsweek reached out to @athitheexplorer for comment via TikTok comments. We could not verify the details of the case.
Cats are creatures of habit and they thrive on routine, so it’s not uncommon for them to choose something they have already used before over something new that they are yet to familiarize with, like the sand at the beach.
An article by Pango Vet, medically reviewed by Dr. Lorna Whittemore, says that predictability gives cats a sense of security, and helps prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. It can also help create healthy boundaries between you and the feline.
The beach can be a great place for your cat if you can keep them safe while enjoying your day out. When taking your pet to a public beach, you must ensure they are on a harness and supervised at all times, to avoid escaping or running into dangers.
It is also very important to keep an eye on the temperature and make sure it is not too hot for your pet, especially the sand, which can end up burning their paws.
Catster says, in an article medically reviewed by Dr. Maja Platisa, that a beach trip is ideal in the spring and fall when the temperatures are mild and comfortable, and your cat is not exposed to the risks of overheating and heatstroke.
It is also advised to avoid crowded places, especially if your cat is not very sociable with strangers, to avoid stressing out the animals and causing them unnecessary distress.
Before taking your cat to the beach, make sure they are up to date with their vaccinations, including panleukopenia, feline calicivirus, feline herpes, feline leukemia virus, and potentially rabies, depending on where you live.
You should bring all the essentials with you, including food, fresh water, any medications, and their personal litterbox. Use a carrier and a leash to transport them and don’t leave them unattended. But, most importantly, don’t force them to do things they don’t like.
The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 1.9 million views and more than 256,000 likes on the platform.
One user, Liz Kelly, commented: “No … cause same! My babies only do their business around a trusted adult.”
