Jasprit Bumrah captaincy record in all formats
With chances fully here that if Rohit Sharma doesn’t play the first Test match against Australia, then Jasprit Bumrah will take charge. So, what does Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy record say? Take a look.
If reports are to be believed, there is a strong chance that India’s regular Test captain, Rohit Sharma, might not play in the first Test match against Australia due to personal reasons, which opens the door for Jasprit Bumrah to lead India. Bumrah, already established as one of India’s most important fast bowlers, doesn’t need much introduction for his bowling, but his captaincy may need a few games to grow. In a country where fast bowlers have rarely captained, the best example that comes to mind is Kapil Dev, who led the team to success. After him, however, there haven’t been many bowler-captained India, yes, Anil Kumble captained in 2008, but apart from that, there aren’t any big examples. Since Bumrah is now expected to lead the Indian team, does he have any experience in leading a team? Certainly, Bumrah has captained India in a couple of games, let’s take a look at his captaincy record.

Jasprit Bumrah captained India in a Test match for the first time on July 1, 2022, against England. He took over as captain for the fifth Test in Birmingham, a match originally scheduled for 2021 but delayed to 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Although Rohit Sharma was expected to lead, Bumrah stepped in after Rohit tested positive for Covid-19. Unfortunately, his leadership ended in a defeat, with England winning by seven wickets. On a personal note, Bumrah had a memorable moment, hitting 35 runs off an over from Stuart Broad, setting a new record.

Jasprit Bumrah made his T20I captaincy debut in August 2023, a year after leading India in Tests. He took charge of the Men in Blue for a three-match series against Ireland, with Hardik Pandya, the then T20I captain, being rested for the series. Unlike his Test captaincy record, Bumrah led a youthful side and enjoyed a successful start to his captaincy, with victories in the first two matches. The third T20I was abandoned due to rain, and India claimed a 2-0 series win.
