IND-W vs SA-W | Twitter lauds as Shafali Varma achieves the fastest double century in women’s test cricket
There’s nothing quite like a batter in peak form making the most of a flat pitch on Day 1 of a Test match. Shafali Varma mirrored this perfectly in the one-off Test against South Africa at Chepauk, blazing her way to the fastest double century in just 194 balls, setting a remarkable new record.
At the hot and humid Chepauk, anticipation built for the one-off Test between India and South Africa. Winning the toss, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur chose to bat first. The opening duo of Smriti Mandhana and Varma set a blistering pace reaching 130/0 by lunch, with Shafali on 65 and Smriti on 64. After lunch, their partnership flourished further with Shafali reaching her century in just 112 balls and Smriti in 123 deliveries by the 40th over. They built a formidable 292-run opening stand before Smriti departed in the 52nd over. Despite Shubha Satheesh’s brief stint, Shafali continued her assault.
Partnering with Jemimah Rodrigues post-Satheesh’s dismissal, Shafali accelerated reaching 150 runs in 158 balls. The South African bowlers struggled as Shafali capitalized on her exceptional form and the favorable pitch conditions. In the 72nd over, she showcased her dominance with two massive sixes off Delmi Tucker, bringing her tally down to 199 runs. With tension palpable, Tucker’s full-length delivery allowed the youngster to calmly secure the single needed to complete her double century.
The Indian pavilion erupted in celebration as the scoreboard confirmed ‘200’, marking Shafali’s jubilant achievement. Her record-breaking feat of scoring the fastest double century in women’s Test cricket, surpassing Annabel Sutherland’s 248-ball record, earned accolades from the entire Indian team, including captain Harmanpreet Kaur, and reverberated across social media with glowing praise from the Twitterverse.
