Ibom Angels secure promotion to NWFL after victory over Osun Babes
Ibom Angels FC have triumphantly returned to the top flight of Nigerian women’s football after defeating Osun Babes 2-0 in the NWFL Championship playoff match on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
Under the expert guidance of former Super Falcons head coach Edwin Okon, the team sealed their promotion to the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) with a perfect record.
The Orange Ladies took control early in the playoff clash at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar, with captain Abasiofon Uwah scoring the opener to set the tone for what would be a dominant performance. Ijeoma Onweagba doubled the lead in the 60th minute, for the Angels. Osun Babes were offered a lifeline in the 76th minute but lost a penalty-kick to half the deficit.
It finished 2-0, sealing a promotion ticket for the Orange ladies. The victory capped a remarkable campaign for Ibom Angels, who emerged as the standout team in the NWFL Championship.
Coach Okon, renowned for his tactical acumen and player development skills, assembled a squad of young, talented players who have risen to the challenge and guided the team back to the top level.
Ibom Angels breezed through Group B1 of the NWFL Championship, defeating Papa Soccer, Delta Babes, Unification FC, and Chosen Generation FC without dropping a point, demonstrating their superiority and determination to regain their place among Nigeria’s elite women’s teams.
The flawless performance at the NWFL Championship not only highlighted Ibom Angels’ quality but also reinforced their deserving status as promotion contenders.
