Grey’s Anatomy’s Alum Jessica Capshaw on What It’s Like Texting Taylor Swift
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Jessica Capshaw revealed she used to be texting buddies with none other than Taylor Swift, until she changed her number, that is. The Grey’s Anatomy alum opened up about their relationship on the April 4 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show how she once formed a connection with the Grammy Award-winning singer.
Capshaw, 47, who portrayed Arizona Robbins on the longtime running TV show Grey’s Anatomy, reminisced about their initial encounter, which took place in a bustling room: “Here’s how it happened. I was in a crowded room. I see her across the room and I’m sort of fangirling … And she looked at me. And I look at her. And I think, ‘Who’s she looking at?’ She was looking at me.” The actress continued to Barrymore, “She comes over and she says to me, ‘You are one of my favorite protagonists on television.’ And I thought, ‘A: oh my god. And B: I’m a protagonist?'”
Their paths crossed again a few years later in a restaurant, leading to an impromptu gathering. “I invited her to come sit with us. And she did. And then we sat and talked for like an hour and a half. It probably was 45 minutes. It was an hour and a half!” Capshaw recounted, noting how enjoyable the interaction was.
The friendship blossomed briefly, with the Grey‘s alum sending Swift, 34, videos of her children singing her most popular songs. However, communication ceased when the pop star apparently changed her number, with the actress recounting,”My babies were singing ‘Shake it Off’ in the bathtub and I would send her videos and she would respond. And then we went to the 1989 tour and then I think she changed her number.”
Barrymore then shared her own Swift anecdote, revealing her hesitance to reconnect with the “Getaway Car” singer at the Grammys despite their history as CoverGirl partners. “I used to be a CoverGirl with her. I used to text with her. I know this person and yet she’s become so big and such a phenomenon that I didn’t say hello,” the TV show host admitted.
Swift has been quite open about her love for Grey’s Anatomy, even naming her cat after main character, Meredith Grey. In a 2012 interview with The Daily Beast, she shared her longstanding commitment to the series, remarking, “I’ve been watching the show since it first came out. It’s the one long-term relationship that I’ve had.”
