Former Eagles WR Weighs in on Saquan Barkley Fit

The Philadelphia Eagles are heading into the new year with high hopes. Their 2023 season took a turn for the worse. Although they made the playoffs, the second half of their season was a dumpster fire.

The Eagles finished the season losing six of their last seven games, including their Wild Card round playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and they knew significant changes needed to be made. The Eagles came away with one of the top free agents on the market, Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley.

After six seasons with the team, Philadelphia acquired Barkley from their division rivals, the New York Giants. It’s a significant upgrade that could move the Eagles back to the top of the NFC. Many, including former Eagles wide receiver Jason Avant, believe Barkley will do that.

Avant caught up with media personality Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson on his Scoop B Radio podcast and said Barkley would be a great fit with the Eagles right out of the gate.

“He doesn’t have to do as much. They didn’t block for him with the Giants that well,” said Avant. “The Eagles are gonna at least get him to the second level untouched, and now Saquon is gonna be special. We believe Saquon has Hall of Fame ability, and with that being said, you put some Pro Bowl pieces and some Hall of Fame pieces. It’s gonna cause him to stand out much more than on the Giants.”

The Eagles are looking to get back to the mountain top, but this time, finish the job. They believe that Barkley could be the missing piece that could turn them back into one of the best offenses in the league.

The Eagles are loaded on that side of the ball, led by quarterback Jalen Hurts, wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, a formidable offensive line, and new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to lead the way.

Barkley signed a three-year, $27.75 million deal with $26 million guaranteed to join the Eagles, making him one of the highest-paid running backs in franchise history. The former No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft will look to compete for the first time in his career, and at the ripe age of 27, he could still be a game-changer for Philadelphia.

Barkley has rushed for over 5,200 yards in his career on 1,201 carries and 35 touchdowns in 74 career games.
