Severe thunderstorms are expected to cause flash floods in six states on Monday, with a number of weather warnings in place.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued flood watch advisories for Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Iowa, Alabama and Florida.

The NWS warned of “very heavy rainfall that will likely lead to scattered to numerous instances of flash flooding.” It added that “significant wind gusts, very large hail, and a few tornadoes” are expected in some areas.

The poor weather is due to a low pressure system sweeping across the southern U.S. throughout Monday that will “prime the environment for showers and thunderstorms,” according to the NWS.

This is a breaking story. More to follow.
