Every club should retire No.10 for Maradona
Andre Villas-Boas has called for every team across world football to retire their No.10 shirt as a tribute to Diego Maradona.
The Argentine footballing legend’s death at the age of 60 was confirmed on Wednesday, leading to an outpouring of grief across the globe.
Argentina’s president Alberto Fernandez has declared three days of mourning for the man who led his country to the World Cup in 1986.
And the mayor of Naples, Luigi De Magistris, has urged Napoli to rename their San Paolo Stadium in honour of the club’s greatest ever player.
But Villas-Boas has suggested a tribute that goes even further: retiring the shirt that Maradona helped make iconic.
“Maradona, yes it is tough news, I would like FIFA to retire the No.10 shirt in all competitions, for all teams,” the Marseille boss said.
“It would be the best homage we could do for him. He is an incredible loss for the world of football.”
