Euro 2024 Violence as Man With ‘Axe’ Shot Ahead of Netherlands vs Poland
German police have shot a man who was armed with an axe in Hamburg on Sunday, according to local law enforcement, ahead of Poland facing the Netherlands in their Euro 2024 match.
Hamburg Police said they had launched a “major police operation” after a person wielding a pickaxe threatened police officers.
Law enforcement “used their firearms,” the police said in a statement. “The attacker was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment.”
German newspaper Bild reported that “police had to take action against a rioting man who attacked fans and officials” during a fan march.
