Euro 2024: Hungary survive player scare to beat Scotland
Hungary player Barnabas Varga is in stable condition at a hospital after being stretchered off during Hungary’s Euro 2024 match against Scotland.
The incident occurred in the second half when Varga collided with Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn following a free kick.
Hungary’s players quickly indicated that Varga was in distress and were upset at the delay in getting medical help. Captain Dominik Szoboszlai was visibly emotional as medical staff attended to Varga, who was shielded by his teammates during treatment.
The match was paused for several minutes while Varga received medical attention. He was eventually taken off the pitch on a stretcher to applause from both sets of fans.
The Hungarian Football Federation released a statement confirming Varga’s stable condition and that he was being treated in a Stuttgart hospital. Hungary’s head coach Marco Rossi mentioned that Varga might need surgery on his cheekbone but assured that he would be “okay.”
Despite the lengthy stoppage, a VAR check for a possible penalty resulted in no action. Hungary went on to win the match 1-0 with a late goal, knocking Scotland out of the tournament.
