Donald Trump Speaks Out After Shooting
Former President Donald Trump posted his first statement since being shot at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening.
In his Truth Social post at 8:42 p.m. ET, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement officials present.
He then expressed his condolences to the “family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.”
The U.S. Secret Service posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, shortly after Trump that confirmed details from the evening. The agency said a spectator was killed and that “two spectators were critically injured.”
In his Truth Social post, Trump said that “nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead.”
Trump described his experience of the bullet piercing “the upper part of my right ear,” saying that he “knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”
Trump ended his post by saying, “GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
In a statement Saturday evening, the Secret Service confirmed that the shooter is deceased after agency “personnel neutralized” them. The statement also said, “a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the venue.”
