Body recovered from River Nene in search for wanted man
Shariqua Ahmed,BBC News, Peterborough
Police investigating the disappearance of a man wanted for shoplifting offences have recovered a body from a city river.
Cambridgeshire Police said the man had been identified on Friday in Bridge Street in Peterborough and had evaded arrest.
He was seen to enter the River Nene and surrounding roads were closed off to allow the emergency services and lowland rescue volunteers to search the water.
A body was recovered at 11:00 BST on Saturday, police confirmed.
Police said they were called at about 13:45 BST on Friday to the Asda supermarket at Viersen Platza.
The man ran from the scene to evade arrest, the force said.
Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.
Formal identification is yet to take place, but the man’s family have been informed, police said.
The case will now be passed to the coroner.
The incident has also been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) by Cambridgeshire Police’s Professional Standards Department.
