Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, Demi Moore: Who’s Who in ‘Landman’ Cast?
After weeks of anticipation, Landman is finally arriving on Paramount +.
Set in West Texas, Paramount describes the show as a “modern-day tale of fortune-seeking in the world of oil rigs… an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires that are fueling an [oil] boom so big it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.”
Landman is based on the documentary podcast Boomtown, which told the story of the West Texan oil boom. Boomtown’s host, Christian Wallace, co-created Landman with Taylor Sheridan, the brains behind Yellowstone and its prequels, 1833 and 1923.
The show is named for the role of a landman who works in the oil and gas industry to negotiate land leases and mineral rights on behalf of oil and gas companies.
Landman stars Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, Ali Larter and Jon Hamm.
Who’s Who in ‘Landman’?
The show centers around the character of Tommy Norris, played Billy Bob Thornton, who works as a crisis executive – or landman – trying to keep his oil company on top during a period of boom.
Giving an insight into the issues the show might explore, in the trailer for Landman, Thornton’s character is heard saying: “Oil and gas industry makes $3 billion a day in pure profit and it’s only getting bigger. But before any of that money is made, you got to secure the land and manage the people. That’s my job. First part’s pretty simple. It’s the second part that can get you killed.”
Norris works for Monty Miller, an oil tycoon played by Jon Hamm. Speaking about the role of his character in relation to Jon Hamm’s, Thornton told British TV show This Morning: “I’m the go-between between the people that work in the oil fields and Jon who owns the oil company. So I’m in charge of making him money and there’s a lot of pressure on me to do that.”
Demi Moore plays Monty Miller’s wife, Cami. On This Morning, Moore described her character as “the caretaker of the group.”
Earlier this year at the Cannes film festival, Moore revealed she got to wear “lots of nice” clothes to play her very rich character.
Angela Norris, Tommy’s ex-wife, is played by actress and former model Ali Larter. “She’s just a wild cat and she’s coming back to get her ex-husband and wreak havoc on his life. She’s very colorful and fabulous, she loves to have fun,” Larter told This Morning.
The show also stars Jacob Lofland, who plays Tommy’s son, Cooper Norris, and Michael Pena, who plays an oil crewman named Armando.
Mustafa Speaks stars as Boss – a character described by Deadline as “one of the more experienced roughnecks on Tommy’s (Thornton) crew, who’s tough-as-nails and has seen it all.”
Describing Boss in an interview with YouTube presenter Jim Conlan, Mustafa said: “He’s all about relationships. He’s about relationships with his guys. About relationships with his family. He just wants to make sure that everyone is taken care of. What that looks like depends on the situation.”
The first two episodes of Landman will be available on Paramount + from November 17.
Newsweek has emailed the Paramount + press office for comment.
