Arsenal were able to claim a 1-1 draw with Fulham thanks to Eddie Nketiah’s late, late equaliser to deny the visitors a vital win.
Josh Maja’s second-half spot kick looked enough to give a buoyant Fulham side victory in a game they really needed to win to stay up.
But in the final minute of seven minutes of injury time, Nketiah bundled in from close range and it looks to have condemned Scott Parker’s side to finishing in the bottom three and relegation.
The Gunners looked tired after their midweek Europa League exploits and deservedly went behind after VAR awarded Fulham a penalty, which Maja duly smashed into the roof of the net just before the hour mark.
Arsenal appeared slow and sluggish from the off, like most of their fixtures at home after competing in the Europa League on a Thursday night.
The likes of Aston Villa and Burnley have already defeated them at home in such a scenario and it came to pass here.
Fulham were unfortunate to see a goal disallowed by VAR in the first half, but other than that chances were at a premium.
And Fulham were able to edge ahead when Maja kept his cool to lash his kick into the roof of the net to allow his team to defend their lead for the final half hour.
But Alphonse Areola held firm, making a series of solid saves until the match entered the final seconds. A Cedric shot across the area landed in the path of Nketiah, onside, to tap into the net and mean that Fulham remain a full six points from safety with just five games left to play.
As for Arsenal, their season will now be defined by the Europa League, where they face former coach Unai Emery and Villarreal.
