Amidst Dan Quinn’s T-Shirt Controversy, Josh Harris and Magic Johnson’s “No Comment” Reaffirms Name Change Stance

Dan Quinn made some interesting changes to the Washington Commanders and for the most part, the franchise has been thankful to him. However, his latest move drew some eyes and Washington’s new head coach is under a bit of scrutiny. It all started when Quinn wore a Washington Commanders T-shirt that had a modified logo with a feather in it.

In essence, the T-shirt potentially tried to revive the Commanders franchise’s history and the stakeholders didn’t take kindly to it. From moral issues to copyright infringements, DQ might have found himself in a bit of a mess. This happened in the recent rookie minicamp and safe to say that the Commanders’ stakeholders are not happy. MLFootball tried to explain the reasoning behind DQ’s moves.

MLFootball tried to explain why DQ did what he did. In a recent post on X the account said, “REPORT: New #Commanders coach Dan Quinn wore this shirt as part of his mission to reconnect with franchise legends alienated by Dan Snyder. 👏 Dan Snyder took over the Commanders about two decades ago but didn’t bother to change the name till 2022.

The earlier name, Washington Redskins, was considered to be offensive to the Native Americans and so a new era for the Washington Football Team kicked in when the team decided to leave its past behind and changed its name to the Commanders. We can see in the photo that Dan Quinn has a normal Commanders’ T-Shirt, but it also shows two feathers attached to it, which might be a subtle reminder of the team’s history.

On Sunday, Magic Johnson and other stakeholders said that they have “no organizational comment” on what has happened and that Dan Quinn took it upon himself to wear the T-shirt in public. Safe to say that the team isn’t reverting to its original name as per the latest discussion. But that apparel highlights more than one problem and it’s not about just the image of the team.

The Washington Commanders have their own ‘headaches’ to deal with

It is important to note that the team didn’t license the T-shirt, nor will it be available for purchase in any NFL-related shops. But one of the main causes of concern is that the apparel “infringes on the organization’s trademarks.” PFT pointed out that it might just have been an innocent mistake on Dan Quinn’s part as he didn’t know how it would affect the stakeholders and the team.

However, on the flip side, the responsibility also falls on Quinn to learn about the dos and don’ts of the team and acquiesce with the team’s decisions. The new owner of the team Josh Harris is adamant that the team will not default back to its old name. Though Dan Quinn’s move was in good faith, he might continue to receive some backlash in the coming time.
