Chiefs News: Promising Update on Player Who Suffered Cardiac Arrest
A scary situation took place on Wednesday during team activities at the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice facility. Defensive lineman BJ Thompson suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest. The team canceled the rest of the team activities for the day.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero initially reported on the situation with Thompson, and also provided an update on him, stating he was in “stable condition.” No further details were given regarding Thompson’s condition until last night when Pelissero revealed more unsettling news.
Pelissero posted that Thompson’s agent Chris Turnage revealed he was still unconscious after suffering the seizure. “From Chiefs DE BJ Thompson’s agent, Chris Turnage, who visited Thompson in the hospital after he suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest today: ‘BJ is still unconscious at this point, but he’s stable and vitals are good. His family asks for your continued prayers.'”
Thompson was stable last evening but had not yet woken up. Thankfully, Pelissero offered a far better update Friday morning.
According to the most recent update from Pelissero, Thompson was revealed to be “awake and responsive.” According to the post, “A positive update: Chiefs DE BJ Thompson is awake and responsive, according to his agent, Chris Turnage. One day after Thompson suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest during a special teams meeting, the second-year pro’s prognosis is good.”
Thompson might have to spend more time in the hospital, but the fact that he is awake and responsive now is a positive sign.
The NFL takes player safety very seriously, and the situation could have gone a lot worse. Thankfully, the medical staff was able to attend to Thompson quickly, and get him to the hospital for further assistance.
This is the second situation involving cardiac arrest the NFL has seen in recent years. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin went down on the field in January 2023 after tackling Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. Hamlin went into cardiac arrest but was quickly attended to by paramedics.
Hamlin’s life was saved by the quick actions of the medical staff on hand, and the same can be said for Thompson. Both of these situations are frightening and could have gone far worse. Hopefully, Thompson can make a full recovery quickly, much like Hamlin did.
