Mary Trump Rips Comparisons of Uncle Donald and Hunter Biden Legal Troubles
Mary Trump slammed comparisons between her uncle, former President Donald Trump, and Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.
Last Thursday, a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business documents to cover up a hush money payment made to adult film actor Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign, making him the first former U.S. president to be convicted on criminal charges. He had pleaded not guilty and indicated he plans to appeal the verdict.
Meanwhile, the trial into Hunter Biden’s gun charges began this week. Prosecutors allege that Biden lied about his status as a drug user when buying a pistol in 2018. Biden has also pleaded not guilty to these charges.
Mary Trump, the former president’s estranged niece who frequently criticizes his policies and legal troubles, posted a TikTok video this week warning about “false equivalence” between Trump and Hunter Biden.
She questioned why Biden’s gun charges trial would be “thought of equal importance to the trial in which the former occupant of the Oval Office, and the guy who’s running for the presidency again, committed election fraud and was found guilty on 34 criminal counts.”
“Unless Hunter Biden decides to run for president, and then unless he incites an insurrection and steals highly insensitive classified documents, I seriously don’t want to hear anything about this trial,” she said.
She also said there are questions about whether Biden’s trial is “politically motivated,” arguing that many legal experts “concur that this is not typically a charge that is brought by itself.”
In the video’s caption, she wrote that the “two things are obviously not the same,” urging the media to “do better.”
Newsweek reached out to Trump’s campaign and Hunter Biden’s lawyer for comment via email.
Trump is facing charges in three other criminal cases, two of which center on alleged efforts at overturning the 2020 presidential election results and one into whether he mishandled classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago estate. He has pleaded not guilty to charges in all cases, accusing prosecutors of targeting him for political purposes.
Republicans, meanwhile, have sought to highlight Biden’s legal troubles. In addition to the gun charges, he also faces a separate case accusing him of not paying $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019. He has pleaded not guilty to charges in that case.
House Republicans have also sought to investigate his foreign business dealings. But polls suggest many Americans are skeptical about these investigations, which have not produced any evidence of wrongdoing by his father, President Biden.
