FIVE red cards as PSG loss to Marseille descends into farce

The PSG v Marseille match descended into utter farce as FIVE players were sent off in one of the most ill-tempered matches in recent memory.

The fixture, which was won by OM thanks to a first-half Florian Thauvin goal, was heated from the very beginning, with an early flurry of bookings and players regularly surrounding the referee.

Four were booked before half-time and by the 75th minute there were 12 players on yellow cards heading into the closing stages.

As PSG pushed hard for an equaliser, each action from either set of players was met with the referee and his assistants being bombarded from all sides as the action just couldn’t get going, leaving six minutes of injury time.

And in the closing minutes, the fixture exploded as all players were involved in a full-scale brawl in the centre-circle, with punches and kicks being thrown in every direction.

Leandro Paredes completely lost his mind, flying through two OM players and picking up his second booking, while Layvin Kurzawa, Dario Benedetto and Jordan Amavi were also dismissed.

And Neymar, who had been in a tempestuous mood for much of the match, was the fifth man sent off, having punched Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez in the back of the head, before shouting to the assistant referee that he had been racially abused, and that was why he took action.

The ramifications of this clash will be felt far and wide, with longer bans likely, not least for Angel Di Maria, who seemed to spit at Gonzalez midway through the second half.
