Walworth market stabbing victim was warm and kind, family says
The family of a 77-year-old man stabbed to death at a historic market in south London have described him as “warm, kind and generous”.
Hilkiah McLeggan, from Southwark, died at the scene after being attacked on East Street in Walworth on Sunday morning.
Known as Mac or LLoyd, his family also said he “would do anything for his friends and family”.
Musse Ali, 66, of no fixed address, appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday charged with one count of murder and with two counts of attempted murder.
Two other men remain in hospital with one in a critical condition.
In a statement handed out by the Met Police, his family added: “He was a hard-working man who worked on past his retirement because he knew he could offer more of himself and enjoyed being amongst his colleagues who were also his friends.
“He was a great support to so many and would offer his help without hesitation to support their needs. His family and friends are devastated and are struggling to make sense of this terrible event.”
They expressed thanks to all those who sent their condolences, apprehended the suspect or helped Mr McLeggan including “those that prayed for him in his final moments”.
The Met said they also requested privacy while they come to terms with such a tragic, senseless and devastating loss.
Members of the public have set up a memorial at East Street Market following the incident.
Mr Ali will next appear at the Old Bailey for a plea hearing on 10 December.
