Plateau United FC have been slapped with severe penalties following a violent incident involving their supporters after the club’s 0-0 draw against Rangers International FC on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at the New Jos Stadium.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) charged Plateau United with security breaches and fan misconduct after spectators threw objects onto the pitch and physically attacked both match officials and Rangers players. One official was injured during the chaotic scenes, prompting immediate concerns over safety at the match.
As a result of the disturbances, the club has been handed the following sanctions:
A 3-point deduction and 3-goal deduction from their current tally for the ongoing season.
A N2 million fine for failing to provide adequate security and for the violent conduct of their fans.
N500,000 compensation for the injured match official and player, with N250,000 allocated to each.
Repair costs for Rangers International FC’s damaged bus, which was targeted by the unruly crowd.
3 home games behind closed doors, with no fans allowed in the stadium.
The club has 48 hours to appeal the sanctions.
The incident has raised alarm within the NPFL and among football fans across Nigeria, with growing concerns over crowd control and the safety of players, officials, and spectators at NPFL matches. The league’s governing body has pledged to strengthen security protocols at all future fixtures.
