Snubbed Super Eagles star sends message to Eguavoen with ninth goal of the season
Despite his fine start to the season, Cyriel Dessers has not caught the attention of Super Eagles of Nigeria Interim coach, Austin Eguavoen to earn a recall to the national team.
Days after the latest snub following the release of invited players for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda, the Glasgow Rangers man has sent message with a goal in Europe.
Cyriel Dessers once again emerged as a key player for Rangers, scoring a vital goal that prevented his team from facing a second defeat in the Europa League.
The Nigerian striker’s first goal of the season in the competition was key, helping Rangers secure a hard-fought draw against Olympiacos.
The match, which started with a goalless first half, seemed to lean in favor of the Greek side when Olympiacos took the lead shortly after the break.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Ayoub El Kaabi received a fantastic pass and made no mistake, firing a precise shot that hit the post before finding the back of the net. However, Dessers was there to respond, showcasing his excellent form this season. He delivered a clinical strike from the edge of the penalty area to equalize, ensuring Rangers walked away with a crucial point.
This goal marked Dessers’ ninth of the season and was crucial for Rangers, who have had a mixed Europa League campaign.
The team started with a solid 2-0 victory over Malmo but suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Lyon. They bounced back with an impressive 4-0 win against FCSB, following a 2-1 victory over Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup ahead of the match against Olympiacos.
Throughout the game, Dessers was the standout player, registering four shots on target while his teammates struggled to find the net.
