Lucas Giolito High School Connection Could Help Red Sox Land Ace

In 2012, the Harvard Westlake High School Wolverines had a trio of pitchers that would all go on to be selected in the first round of the MLB Draft. Sophomore pitcher Jack Flaherty went 6-1 with a 1.77 ERA while senior Max Fried went 8-2 with a 2.02 ERA. Senior pitcher Lucas Giolito was injured early in the year, but he finished 2-1 with a sub-1.00 ERA.

These three have been a tight-knit trio for the last 15 years. When Fried made the World Series in 2021, Flaherty, Giolito and their former high school baseball coach were all in attendance to watch the southpaw pitch.

Now, these three have the perfect opportunity to team up in the big leagues.

Giolito is a member of the Boston Red Sox now, after he opted into his player option for next year.

Both Fried and Flaherty are set to enter unrestricted free agency. Flaherty has already voiced his eagerness to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he was just crowned a World Series champion a few days ago.

Fried, meanwhile, enters free agency after eight successful seasons with the Atlanta Braves. The 30-year-old southpaw holds a career ERA of 3.07 across 151 starts and 884.1 career innings.

While money talks, the Red Sox still have a little bit of leverage when it comes to negotiations with both Fried and Flaherty. How often are they going to be offered the opportunity to play together with one or two teammates from high school?
