Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has challenged striker Gabriel Jesus to “earn the right to play more” as the Brazilian battles to find his best form this season.
Despite making eight appearances across all competitions, Jesus is yet to score a goal for the Gunners. His campaign has been further complicated by recurring fitness issues, including a groin injury that sidelined him in August.
Arteta expressed his frustration over Jesus’ injury, which came after the forward had an impressive pre-season, scoring against Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester United.
“He came on in a great shape, probably in the best condition he’s been with us,” Arteta said. “He was flying in pre-season, and unfortunately, he got that injury straight away, which affected him for a few weeks.”
The Arsenal boss remains optimistic that Jesus will rediscover his best form but has urged him to prove why he deserves more playing time.
“He’s been working hard to come back, and now he needs to get his rhythm. He’s played in several games recently, starting twice against Atalanta and Bolton, and coming off the bench against Southampton,” Arteta explained.
“So yeah, he’s there. Now he needs to earn the right to play more. He has our full support, and he’s an important player for us who can play in various positions.”
Arteta’s backing comes at a crucial time, as Arsenal prepare for a busy schedule with expectations running high. The manager hopes Jesus can regain his sharpness and become a key player for the team once again.
