Why Pat Sajak is Returning to ‘Wheel of Fortune’ So Soon
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Pat Sajak is back for one last hurrah! The beloved Wheel of Fortune host will be returning to the familiar stage for a final spin.
Although Sajak concluded his iconic four-decade run as the show’s host on June 7, the 77-year-old is stepping out of his short-lived retirement to host the upcoming season of the game show’s celebrity edition this fall as confirmed by TVLine. ABC announced his return in their fall primetime schedule rollout on Wednesday, July 10.
In Sajak’s regular Wheel of Fortune farewell episode, he expressed his gratitude to viewers, saying, “I have a few thanks and acknowledgements before I go, and I want to start with all of you watching out there. It’s been an incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes night after night, year after year, decade after decade.”
Reflecting on his tenure over the past 40 seasons, Sajak noted the show’s impact beyond entertainment: “It’s been a place where kids learned their letters, where people from other countries honed their English skills, where families came together along with friends and neighbors and entire generations. What an honor to have played even a small part in all of that. Thank you for allowing me into your lives.”
Sajak’s infamous role will be taken over by tv personality Ryan Seacrest, who is looking forward to his new gig as the game show’s host. In fact, one of Seacrest’s Instagram posts created quite a buzz among fans as he teased his upcoming role.
On February 18, the 49-year-old shared a video and image of some of his favorite foods, including tinned fish and hummus. One enthusiastic fan asked, “Ryan, it all looks delicious except…whatever fish! To each their own. Ryan could you PLEASE answer (I know you usually not but please) this, do you miss working at Live or excited about your new job? Sure miss you in the mornings.” Seacrest replied, “I’m very excited.” The short and sweet response was enough to excite TV viewers eagerly awaiting his debut on the game show.
The new episodes of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune with Sajak hosting have yet to be filmed, however, they are set to premiere on Monday, Oct. 7, at 8/7c.
