Why I’ve Preferred Saka Over Palmer

Gareth Southgate has explained the reasons why he has preferred Bukayo Saka to Cole Palmer at Euro 2024 for England so far.

Saka has started all three England games at Euro 2024, contributing one assist for Jude Bellingham in the opening match against Serbia.

However, the Three Lions have come under fire for their stale style of play and lack of attacking intent while Palmer was praised after his 20-minute cameo against Slovenia last time out.

It was the first time the former Manchester City star has played any minutes this competition and there has been clamour to get the 22-year-old into the starting XI for Sunday’s last-16 clash against Slovakia.

According to talkSPORT Saka will retain his spot on the right-hand side for England this weekend with one change being readied instead.

And when talkSPORT’s England correspondent Faye Carruthers asked Southgate where the differences lie between the two players, the England boss gave some insight into why he favours the Arsenal ace.

The 53-year-old said: “Slightly different players, but both of them favour their left foot and coming in, rolling off the right wing.

“Bukayo perhaps is more direct, more speed and more experienced, clearly.

“Cole is adapting well to, firstly, the Premier League this season and then life with us as well.

“So we are very happy with both players. Both have contributed really well and you want your changes to make a difference.

“In the last couple of games, I think our attacking changes have made a difference to how the team has played.”
