Euro 2024: Luka Jovic scores late equalizer as Serbia hold Slovenia

Luka Jovic scored a late equalizer to rescue Serbia and deny Slovenia their first-ever victory at the European Championships in a thrilling 1-1 draw.

The match saw Slovenia dominate for much of the game, with Timi Elsnik hitting the post early on and Benjamin Sesko missing a golden opportunity on the rebound. Serbia struggled to break through, with Aleksandar Mitrovic thwarted twice by Slovenia’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak and hitting the bar from close range.

Slovenia finally broke the deadlock when Zan Karnicnik capitalized on a back-post opportunity. They were on the brink of a historic win until Jovic’s dramatic header in the 96th minute leveled the score, sending Serbia’s fans into jubilation.

Despite the disappointment, Slovenia showcased their strength, having previously held Denmark to a draw. They’ve now lost only two of their last 23 matches, underscoring their resilience and competitiveness.

With world-class talents like Oblak and promising young striker Sesko, Slovenia poses a formidable challenge in Group C. Their next test comes against England, who must be wary of underestimating Slovenia’s capabilities when they meet in Cologne.
